No matter what product, service, or opportunity you provide, there are a zillion other people pitching the same thing – or something similar. So, be ready to stand out and make an outstanding impression at face-to-face networking events.
Here are some tips:
- Plan to stand and introduce yourself at every meeting. If you don’t get the chance, no sweat. But if you do, be prepared to make a great impression. You want to appear confident, poised, and professional. Choose a minimum of words for maximum effect. Don’t think, “It’s not a big deal, I’ll just wing it.” It IS a big deal. It’s your reputation!
- Consider the visual message you want to send. No need to be flashy, but dress to be seen. Have you become so “at home” with your group that you appear too casual, even a little sloppy? If you want group members to be your advocates in the business world, send a clear message that you value a professional appearance. And impress the visitors too!
- Be considerate and respectful of everyone you meet. Each individual also represents an invisible crowd of family, friends, casual acquaintances, business associates. Don’t leave thinking, “No sale. I fail.” You just don’t know who they know! If they like you, they will talk. If they don’t like you, they will talk – or not mention you at all! Leave having presented your best self. And know that, as a result, you have increased the likelihood that someone will pass the word – a GOOD word!
