Moving Forward

I finally did something I've been scared to do. I did it and I'm proud.

Seven years in business and I couldn't bring myself to make a simple marketing call!

I'd been shy about calling on retirement communities--which is kind of strange since my business is all about helping people move into those communities.

Sure I was happy to attend their events when invited, but just call up the marketing directors and invite myself? No way!

I dreaded it so much that I just wouldn't do it. I know that sounds ridiculous, especially since these are really nice people I've known for years. But, there you have it--the honest, silly truth.

Well, this week I did it. And, not only did I do it once, but I did it THREE times! I called up three different retirement communities and made appointments.

I screwed up my courage, walked in there with my shoulders back, and talked about why my book would be the perfect gift for them to give prospective clients. I offered various pricing deals, including their buying a large number of books and receiving a complimentary one-hour presentation for their community.

The words came out just the way I wanted: no slimy sales pitch (God forbid!), but as a way to help my friends who work in these communities get people to actually move in.

And guess what? They got excited! They were excited about the book, but they were even more excited about the presentation. They treated buying a large number of books as a done deal!

I expected them to treat me as if I were bothering them. Instead, they acted relieved to hear about my solution to their problem!

My new business coach recently told me, "If you're running a business, you're in sales and marketing. It's part of the job, no excuses, just do it!" So I did.

My resistance strikes me as absolutely hilarious--now! Why in the world did I avoid doing this for so long? I'm so amazed and relieved that I can hardly stop laughing: I actually enjoyed myself. And, I can hardly wait to do it again!
